Finance Business Partnering Training

Transforming finance training

Finance Business Partnering Training

Our Finance Business Partnering training recognises that, in the age of digital transformation, it is becoming increasingly important (if not critical) for all accountants in all roles to develop these skills.  We work with our clients to create bespoke courses that suit their culture, ensuring that our Finance Business Partnering training is fit for purpose and not merely theoretical.  Developed for maximum business impact and return on training investment, our tailored courses ensure there are real practical takeaways so that staff transfer knowledge and skills from the “classroom” back to their “desk”.

Finance Business Partnering (FBP) Training

Why do I need Finance Business Partnering skills?

As automation and the drive towards digital transformation accelerates, much of the traditional work of an accountant will be automated. Therefore as the role transforms, accountants will need to evolve and develop additional skills.  This is always pertinent no matter what role we are working in: whether a formal “finance business partner ” role, or a role where this skill set would be heavily required (e.g. FP&A) or even a technical role (e.g. financial controller).

We shouldn’t wait for digital transformation to overtake us and then play catch up.  Investing in these skills earlier gives us time to develop and improve them – it can also make work a more interesting place!

Our courses will help you and your team to develop the key skills that enable finance professionals to add value to the business by bringing proactive insights rather than mere reporting of the business therefore becoming a valued part of the decision-making management team.

Note:  This is a very high level outline.  Finance Business Partnering can encompass many different elements and as part of the development process we would discuss with you what the best topics to cover would be for your organisation.  We’ve 20 years’ experience in creating bespoke courses; that combined with our existing library of material means that we can develop a bespoke course very quickly.

Present financial information

Why do I need to Present Financial Information better?

A key part of any Finance professional’s role is to convey financial information to those who may not be accountants.  This means that we have to bring “the numbers to life” or to “tell the story behind the numbers”.
Many organisations have evolved from simple tables to more image based tools, using excel (now also with Power BI) and data visualisation tools.

Presenting data better is great – but often that is still just “pretty data”.  Does this “pretty data” actually influence the business and explain what has happened?  For us to provide valuable business insight, we need to go further. We need to look at the data and transform it into something that can drive forward better decisions to provide real insight and add value.

This isn’t an IT course and we will not be using excel. It is about understanding how best to convey messages when you have complex data.  We will explore: understanding stakeholders, psychology and some examples of the most powerful storytellers and messages of recent times.

We will make an action plan on how this can be applied in a practical way back to your real world reports (we recommend that you bring examples with you).

digits, counting, mathematics

Note: We encourage delegates to bring real life reports (sensitive data removed) with them and during the day they can work on how to improve them based on what they have learnt throughout the day.

Becoming a Commercial Accountant

Why do I need to become more commercial?

Commercial skills have never been so important – digital transformation is taking over a lot of the traditional work that an accountant would do.  Therefore by developing other skill sets it will help you progress your career to the next level.

The need to become more commercial is an accusation that is very commonly targeted at accountants. On this “Becoming a Commercial Accountant” training course we explore what skills you need to develop to allow your career to flourish.  Accountants often feel that there is an inherent conflict in the need to balance their stewardship responsibility with the commercial, entrepreneurial demands of the business.

On this “Becoming a Commercial Accountant” training course we will explore what it means to be “commercial” and will develop the necessary skills to think in a more commercial fashion.  We often discover that accountants are naturally commercial anyway! Finally we will move on to address how to gain influence, communicate and negotiate more effectively.

Note: Often when developing this course it is useful for us to speak to the wider business about their perceptions of the finance function.

T shaped Accountant

Why do I need to become T shaped?

After qualification as an accountant the start of progression is relatively linear (i.e. moving up the “T”). However, at some point this reaches a ceiling, and it is important to not only develop technical skills but also branch out sideways (making the rest of the “T”) by fostering other management skills.

This “T-shaped” phrase is also used by the accountancy bodies and an interesting report by ACCA can be found
discussing the future of learning.

We use the term “T shaped accountant” as an umbrella term for a series of courses that explore the different skill sets that a finance professional will need in the future in order to survive.

The more senior you become, the greater the need to add value to your organisation by broadening your range of skills – like a T account – by developing sideways rather than just becoming increasingly technical.

On this highly practical programme we will explore methodologies, tools and techniques to better understand stakeholders and improve relationships.  We will look at why often accountants struggle with this, exploring what the barriers are and how to overcome them.

Note: T shaped accountant isn’t really a course title in itself.  We have used this as an umbrella term when creating a development programme for a team of accountants.
